Trump's Actions Present a Threat to Civilization.

His internal and external initiatives – ranging from the attempted coup in the past to recent actions and warnings – weaken not only domestic and international jurisprudence. However, the issue goes deeper.

They jeopardize the very concept of what we mean by.

The ethical foundation of any advanced culture is to prevent the more powerful from attacking and exploiting the weaker. Failing that, we would be permanently immersed in a brutish war where survival of the strongest wins.

This ideal is central of the nation's founding texts. It’s also the heart of the postwar international order advocated by the US, which stresses international cooperation, democracy, human rights, and the supremacy of law.

Yet, it is a delicate principle, easily violated by those who choose to misuse their influence. Upholding it demands that the powerful have enough integrity to abstain from seeking temporary advantages, and that society demand responsibility if they don't.

Unchecked strength does not equal right. It results in turmoil, chaos, and conflict.

Whenever individuals, companies, or nations that are wealthier and stronger attack and exploit those that are weaker, the framework of society weakens. If such aggression are allowed to continue, the fabric unravels. Allowing it to persist, the world can descend into instability and violence. History provides ample precedent.

Today, we live in a global community marked by extreme inequality. Influence and wealth are more concentrated than in modern history. This invites the powerful to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they feel untouchable.

The wealth of a handful of billionaires is almost beyond comprehension. The reach of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors covers much of the globe. AI is likely to further concentrate economic and political clout further. The offensive capability of the major powers is unprecedented in human history.

Supported by a compliant faction and a sympathetic supreme court, the presidency has been made into the most dominant and unchecked entity of the state in the modern era.

Put it all together and you grasp the threat.

A direct line ties past breaches of norms to ongoing menaces. Each were premised on the overconfidence of absolute power.

One observes a similar pattern in other global contexts: in territorial invasions, in coercive diplomacy, and in the global depredation by massive conglomerates.

But, raw power does not establish right. It fosters uncertainty, upended order, and armed conflict.

History shows that frameworks designed to limit the influential also protect them. If these guardrails are removed, their insatiable demands for greater influence and riches in time cause their collapse – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And risk global conflict.

This kind of disregard for rules will haunt the nation and the world – and indeed civilization – for years to come.
