Rescued from Ukraine Lioness Undergoes Essential Dental Operation
A Wildlife Rescue Center
An adolescent female lion rescued from war-torn Ukraine has received vital oral operation to extract a badly decayed canine tooth resulting from an infection.
Lira arrived at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, Kent on 14 March following a campaign by managing director the sanctuary's leader, who raised £500,000 to fund her and several other lions from Ukraine.

The procedure was performed on Friday by veterinary dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"Upon inspecting Lira's jaw and mouth, I could see immediately the broken tooth was highly inflamed," said the dentist.
He thought the dental issue was caused by a trauma experienced over twelve months back, leading to bacteria producing toxins within the fang.
"My philosophy is animal oral health issues need to be treated in the most predictable, the most conservative and most secure manner," he said.
The expert clarified that as the lioness no longer required to hunt for food, removal was the most "sensible and ethical solution."
The Big Cat Sanctuary
The sanctuary said the extracted tooth was 3.14 inches in length, with Mr Kertesz having to remove a pocket of pus from under the fang and seal the large wound with multiple absorbable stitches.
He also performed a dental procedure on the opposing upper canine tooth, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
Briony Smith, curator at The Big Cat Sanctuary, declared the operation was a "complete success."
She said the team had observed "a minor swelling on Lira's jawline" but it had been impossible to determine "how serious the condition was."
"Lira will be a little uncomfortable to initially, but now that the infectious materials are removed from her system, she will start to feel much better over the next few days," added Ms Smith.
The successful surgery marks a major milestone in Lira's recovery after her arrival from the conflict area.
