The US region famous for its historical past, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is experiencing a rapid transformation. A recent study finds that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the planet.
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, as per the study. The pace of its warming has apparently increased notably in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," explained a primary researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for millennia."
The research positions the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist noted.
For the study, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.
"This represents very fast warming, which is worrying," commented the study author.
A primary cause for this unusual accumulation of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the sea like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered extreme climate events in the past decade, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic aspects of regional life:
"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely vanished from much of southern New England."
