Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the house in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.
Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled following the incident was found soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the property turned into a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.
The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.
A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.
Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.
According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
