The former official announced he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel made public his repeated communications with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their advancement".

Summers, who previously headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The newly public messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it respected his choice to step down.

"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the Board," the company commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would compel the US justice department to release its documents on the case.

The measure will then move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked emails released by the Congressional committee recently mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were released with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "total ownership for my poor choice to continue communicating with the financier".

He further stated that he desired "to rebuild confidence and mend connections with the people most important to me".

Professional History

The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that he was not associated with the institution.
