The families of teenagers unaccounted for after a devastating inferno at a venue in a Switzerland's alpine town are facing an agonising period of uncertainty for official news and pleading for information about their children via social media.

The fire engulfed the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of the first day of the year. Circulated images show the roof structure being engulfed in flames as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.

Emergency services have warned that it could take considerable time to formally name the fatalities of the fire, which killed four dozen individuals and injured another 119. Officials said on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with efforts ongoing to locate the remaining few.

In the meantime, relatives have been posting on online platforms to plead for information about their missing relatives who were in attendance that evening.

Appeals for the Unaccounted For
