A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.
The successful offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates locations domestically and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds fortune," stated the business owner, a notable bidder at the yearly new year's auction.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is noted for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
After the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."
This most recent purchase exceeds his previous record purchases:
Despite once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record yet again.
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be available at its eateries throughout the country.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a good way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one elated customer.
